Its over. After three short months of diet and exercise the Gilbert Family Weight-Loss Challenge came to an end this morning. On December 31st, Devin and eight other members of the Gilbert family weighed in and paid $25 to join the challenge. The winner was to recoup his/her $25 and receive an additional prize of $200. Devin's starting weight was an appalling 179 lbs (roughly 30 lbs heavier than he was on his wedding day). Devin's plan was to cut carbs and exercise for an hour a day. It started slow, but as torturous 1 miles runs evolved into enjoyable 3 mile runs, little by little the pounds came off. By mid-March Devin had lost 25 lbs and it looked as though he could win this thing; then came some setbacks. When Melissa arrived in Washington she found out that the Gilbert brothers, true to form, had begun taking weight loss pills (reminiscent of the "anything to win" mentality that killed our fantasy baseball league last year). In addition, after deciding to double his efforts by running once in the morning and again at night, Devin sustained a competition-ending knee injury. It became apparent that "manorexic" "pill-popping" Todd was now going to win the competition. Playing to Todd's desire for cake and Devin's love of money, a deal was struck last week. Devin would concede Todd's victory and in return would get $50 of the prize money. So it ends. This morning Devin weighed in and you can see the result above. Devin lost 30lbs or 16.7% of his body weight. All in all, it was a great competition and I think we all benefited. However, the real winner was Melissa who got her "sexy" Devin back and finally got him to agree to sit for a family picture.
